Robosapien was designed by a robotics physicist who worked for Nasa. He is a multifunction remote operate robot that can accomplish more than 80 actions such as dance, burp, give a high five, and it can listen for intruders and it can even pick up things with his hands. He is also qualified with touch sensors, and it stops when it bumps into walls. It has many functions and you can program them to trigger automatically when something touches his arm or makes a sound. In addition, there are tons of modifications out there that you can try to heighten the robot. My personal favorite is a free open source program that you can find at SourceForge that let's you operate the robot with your voice.
It's great for impressing your friends or production your own robot movies. This humanoid is ready for play right out of the box, there is no need for set up. With Robodyssey's Hack-A-Toy kit, the remote-controlled Robosapien is converted into an autonomous robot. My students and I rewired Robosapien so it would respond to our BX-24 microcontroller commands rather than the remote control. (We added a switch so we could toggle between autonomous-mode and human-controlled-mode.) A Sharp infrared range finder, which was secured to the robot's chest, was used to determine if an object is in the robot's way or if the robot is near the edge of a table. In either case, the robot grunts, backs up, chooses a random direction to turn (left or right), turns, and then moves forward again. After a couple of minutes, the BX-24 tells the robot to go to sleep, which is also shown in the video. (Listen for the snoring.) Wow-Wee manufactures the Robosapien and Robodyssey Systems manufacturesRAMB II motherboard you see here. The robot's brain is NetMedia's BX-24 microcontroller, which is programmed using the BasicX language. A few years back I bought this little robot from SilverLit Toys, called EchoBot. All he did was basically walk around, make noises, and repeat anything that you recorded in his microphone. The box also said he could communicate and take orders from other robots in the same toy line, but I decided not to buy any more. But one day not so long ago, I was trying to get my RoboSapien V2 to bowl properly when I wondered if his RSV2 to RoboPet interaction function would work with the EchoBot. Surprisingly, there does seem to be a correlation between their actions, probably since they're both using an IR transmitter to communicate.
